Bon Secours Announces September Events

Bon Secours Spiritual Center begins September with its monthly “Friend’s Day of Prayer” on Sept. 2, from 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Sister Carol Czyzewski guides the program, which costs $30 and includes lunch.

Caregivers once again receive support and comfort during “Care for the Caregiver: A Time of Respite,” now offered twice each month for the remainder of the year. In September, this program takes place on Sept. 5, from 9-11 a.m., and on the 16th, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. BSSC welcomes donations (suggested amount: $15), or a free-will offering for those facing financial difficulty.

On Sept. 12, Bon Secours and the P. Francis Murphy Initiative join forces to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Bishop P. Francis Murphy’s death by “Celebrating Leadership Roles of Women in the Church.” This program, which features keynote speaker Diane M. Caplin, runs from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and costs $35, including lunch.

Facilitators Mary Perschy and Betty Martin present “Group Spiritual Direction – Overview” Sept. 13 from 1-5 p.m. Participants experience being part of a small community that supports contemplative listening. The afternoon costs $15.

Women can learn to enhance their physical and spiritual well-being during “Companions on the Journey: Women’s Wellness Retreat Weekend,” Sept. 18-20. The weekend costs $210, with a $50 deposit.

The first of 10 meetings of “Group Spiritual Direction” also begins Sept. 20, from 2-4:30 p.m. The series costs $185.

On Sept. 23, Rev. Joseph Breighner, a popular radio show host, explores how to face the challenges and uncertainties of our world in “Living Our Best Life,” scheduled for 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The program costs $50 and includes lunch.

The works of deceased Irish poet John O’Donohue serve as the inspiration for “Awakening to the Light Within,” which runs from Sept. 26 and 27. Sister Eileen Quinn guides this retreat, which costs $125 and requires a $50 deposit.

Finally, Brother Michael Laratonda guides “The Passionate Love of God,” a silent retreat that takes place September 27–Oct. 3. The event costs $550, with a $150 deposit.

Pianist Robert M. Staham Performs Aug. 16 at Bon Secours

Bon Secours Spiritual Center has added a “Music at Marriottsville” event to its schedule this month. Visit the chapel Sunday, Aug. 16 at 3 p.m. to hear pianist Robert M. Statham perform works by American composers. As always, BSSC does not charge for the event but does welcome donations. The address is 1525 Marriottsville Road, in Marriottsville.

Bon Secours Announces July Events

Joanne Abalos, Information and Guest Services Coordinator for Bon Secours Spiritual Center, announces three upcoming events.

On July 10, join fellow job seekers and career changers from 9 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. in the first “Keep the Spirit Up” workshop. Dr. Thomas E. Little, the Center’s Executive Director, and Sharon Scibek, of Swan Learning Services, facilitate a morning session of reflection and relaxation. Guests may also use the outdoor pool, weather permitting. After a noon lunch, Carol Rogers, head of Transition Services for Right Management, Inc., discusses “Making Successful Career Transitions.”

Although free of charge, this program requires a reservation; space is limited. The Center will collect a free-will offering.

Beginning July 12, Retreat Director, educator and international songwriter Jan Novatka leads “All Is Holy, All Is One,” a study inspired by the Baltimore Catechism’s question and response, “Where is God? God is Everywhere.” Guests may check in at 5 p.m. on July 12 and dine at 6, and they check out at 11 a.m. on July 17. The retreat costs $475, with a $150 deposit.

Spiritual Directors Justine Cyr, Muriel Curren, Don Evason, and Phil Cover lead a 20-person silent, Directed Retreat beginning July 18. Guests may check in at 5 p.m. and dine at 6, and they depart at 11 a.m. on July 24. The retreat costs $535, with a $150 deposit.

Additionally, folk musicians Susan and Philip Esserwein appear in the Bon Secours Chapel at 3 p.m. on July 19 for the monthly Music at Marriottsville event. The concerts are free of charge, but the center welcomes free-will offerings. Bon Secours’ address is 1525 Marriottsville Road.

Bon Secours Hosts Father’s Day Cookout June 21

Celebrate Father’s Day this weekend in the beautiful setting of Bon Secours Spiritual Center, 1525 Marriottsville Road in Marriottsville.

BSSC invites all dads and families to attend a Father’s Day Cookout on June 21, from noon - 2 p.m. The meal includes barbecue pork, ribs, sirloin burgers, kielbasa with peppers and onions, roasted corn, baked beans, pasta salad, watermelon, sheet cake and beverages.

Bon Secours Announces June Events

During the week of June 14, Bon Secours Spiritual Center offers an in-depth study of “The Spirituality of St. Paul’s Gospel,” at a cost of $575 with a $150 deposit. Guests may check-in on the 14th at 5 p.m. and then dine at 6, and they depart on the 20th at 11 a.m. Michael Fonseca, director of Spiritual Formation for the diocese of Gaylord, Michigan, facilitates the retreat.

On June 25, Sharon L. Scibek, SPHR, addresses issues such as work/life balance, an increasing workload, and recession-related fears and challenges as part of “Being the ‘Human’ in Human Resources,” a retreat day designed for Human Resource professionals.

The day runs from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and costs $99, including breakfast hospitality, lunch, and retreat materials.

Also beginning June 25, social psychologist Diarmuid O’Murchu leads a four-day exploration of creationism juxtaposed with modern science and cosmology in “Finding God in Creation’s Story.”

Check-in begins at 5 p.m. on June 25, with dinner at 6, and check-out takes place at 4 p.m. on June 28. The retreat costs $275, with a $50 deposit.

Lastly, BSSC invites you to attend its monthly “Music at Marriottsville” event in the chapel June 28 at 3 p.m. Bring the family to hear intuitive pianist and composer Robert Hitz perform a fusion of classical, romantic, Latin, jazz and Middle Eastern music. Sunday Concerts Begin March 15 at Bon Secours

Beginning in March, the Bon Secours Spiritual Center, at 1525 Marriottsville Road in Marriottsville, will offer a wonderful opportunity for music lovers. Musicians may share their talent in the BSSC Chapel during Sunday Concerts, which will take place from 2-3:30 p.m. on the third Sunday of every month. The chapel features a newly renovated organ, an upright piano, and space for up to 20 musicians at one time. BSSC welcomes any music that remains respectful of its surroundings.

Bon Secours Announces February Events

Bon Secours Spiritual Center presents several special events next month, all of which require advance registration. The first event, Feb. 4, is a Friends’ Day of Prayer, which takes place the first Wednesday of every month from 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. and costs $25, including morning refreshments and lunch. Sharon Winchester will guide the program.

On Feb. 14, speakers John and Lauri Przybysz invite married couples and those contemplating marriage to participate in Marriage Makes a Difference. The evening will include wine and cheese, dinner, reflection on marriage, and a service of recommitment. Registration costs $60 per couple.

Finally, beginning Feb. 21, Thomas E. Little, executive director of BSSC, offers a seven-Saturday retreat entitled, “Lenten Journey with St. Paul: Called to Conversion.” The series costs $50, including a guidebook, or attendees may pay $10 per session. Each session runs from 9-10:30 a.m.

Bon Secours Offers ‘Care for the Caregiver’ Jan. 31

On Jan. 31, from 9 a.m. to noon, the Bon Secours Spiritual Center presents “Care for the Caregiver: A Day of Respite.” This program, led by fellow caregivers, offers comfort, reflection, and a brief reprieve for those who spend their days in the service of others.

Bon Secours, a Roman Catholic Retreat and Conference Center, describes itself as a “place of peace, healing and hope.” Nestled in the picturesque woodlands adjoining Patapsco State Park, the Center offers workshops, seminars, conferences, retreats and other services for those of various faith backgrounds who seek tranquility and spiritual direction.
