The board of trustees of the Horizon Foundation has approved a Strategic Initiatives Program grant to Neighbor Ride, a volunteer-based nonprofit for Howard County's older residents, in the amount of $23,000 for agency capacity building and sustainability. The funding will be utilized to strengthen Neighbor Ride's ability to serve the steadily growing number of Howard County's older residents in need of supplemental transportation services by supporting a part-time staff position, focused on community outreach and database enhancements, resulting in more efficient volunteer matching and reporting capabilities.

Integral Systems, an international provider of satellite ground systems, has announced its plans to move to Columbia in February 2009. The move will bring 250 aerospace technology jobs to the area. Founded in 1982, Integral was the first company to offer commercial software products for satellite command and control.

Gregory Horne, of Grasonville, a sales and leasing associate with Manekin, in Columbia, has been selected by Corporate Facility Advisors-CORFAC International as one of 12 young professionals to join the CORFAC Next Generation Advisory Council. Horne is responsible for leasing and business development with an emphasis on the Annapolis and Anne Arundel single-story office, mid-rise office and flex-office market.

United Way of Central Maryland has awarded an additional $76,000 in funding to the following Howard County nonprofit agencies who applied for discretionary grants: Alianza de la Comunidad, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Christ Church Link, Community Action Council, Conexiones, Congregations Concerned for the Homeless, Domestic Violence Center of Howard County, Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center, Fish of Howard County Inc., HC DrugFree, Maryland Society for Sight, Neighborhood Ride, Prepare for Success, STTAR Center, St. John Baptist Church Mentoring Program and Volunteer Center Serving Howard County. The grants focus on United Way's emphasis on basic needs and financial stability.

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Inc., in Owings Mills, has awarded FIRN Inc., a private, nonprofit organization in Columbia, a $40,000 grant to assist FIRN in accomplishing its mission to ensure equal access to community resources and opportunities for all foreign-born individuals in Howard County and Central Maryland.

The Association for International Practical Training, in Columbia, has appointed three new board members: Robert Gordon, president of R. Gordon Associates; Aslam Masood, retired chief financial officer of Crescent Healthcare Inc.; and Jim Pilarski, senior vice president for human resources of Marriott International, International Lodging.

Paul G. Skalny, of Howard County, a principal of the Howard County law firm, Davis, Agnor, Rapaport & Skalny LLC, has joined the Howard Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees.

Tecore Networks, a provider of multi-protocol mobile networks in Columbia, and EGC International, a global systems integrator specializing in telecommunications and information technology in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., have announced an agreement that enables EGC to distribute Tecore's wireless infrastructure products throughout Latin America.

Joyce Snow, of Columbia, was chosen as one of three international finalists for the $10,000 Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Award by the Soroptimist Federation of the Americas. Her application earned her the Soroptimist International of Howard County Award of $1,250, and the South Atlantic Region Award of $5,000, prior to being forwarded to the Federation of the Americas level.

Chuck Carroll and Kimani "Dexter" Gaines have been appointed as sales associates with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Ellicott City/Chatham.
