If you are a regular fairgoer, you might have seen a new face this year. Meredith Myers joined the staff at the Howard County Office of the Maryland Cooperative Extension May 27.

Myers has a great deal of experience in 4-H, having grown up participating in the program in Montgomery County. She began at the age of 5 and continued until she was 19.

As a 4-H member, her primary projects were rabbits and market lambs. She also entered in the Montgomery County Fair in the categories of sewing, cooking, canning, baked goods, photography, crafts, quilting and knitting projects. She was a member of the 4-H Sheep and Swine Club and of the Rabbit Club.

Myers participated in rabbit judging and represented her county at the Maryland State Rabbit Judging Contest. The contest is held during the state fair in Timonium in August and September. Montgomery County has had a reputation for sending very strong teams to state for many years.

As a youth, she won the National Management Award at the American Rabbit Breeders Association convention. This convention is held annually and serious rabbit breeders from all over the country attend each year with their best rabbits.

Locally, Myers participated in both rabbit showmanship contests and sheep showmanship contests. She also participated in Fashion Revue, where 4-H'ers get to model clothing they have created.

After high school, Myers attended the University of Connecticut where she earned her bachelor's degree in animal science with an emphasis in dairy. While attending college, she participated in livestock judging.

When asked what her favorite part of 4-H was, Myers said that it was the leadership opportunities.

"I liked the chance to influence my community," she said.

Myers knew that she wanted to work with 4-H after college. She is excited to be working with Howard County 4-H as the 4-H faculty extension assistant. Specifically, she will be working in the areas of environmental science, human science and outreach.

Welcome to Howard County 4-H, Meredith Myers.
