The 63rd annual Howard County Fair opens Saturday, Aug. 2. Mickey Day, president of the board of directors of the Howard County Fair Association Inc., talked with reporter Christie Dumler about the fair, one of the highlights of the summer.

CD: What keeps bringing back people to the fair year after year?

MD: The Howard County Fair Board works hard to promote the importance of agriculture and provide the youth of today and new residents an opportunity to experience the same.

CD: Would you elaborate on the importance of the fair to the 4-H'ers and the importance of the 4-H'ers to the fair?

MD: The fair is the venue where the 4-H'ers get to bring their projects to see how they stack up with other similar projects. It is a great learning experience for all and something they will use in life as they grow older.

CD: The Home Arts exhibit showcases 25 sections of original items community members bring to the fair for judging. What are some of the more popular sections?

MD: Baked goods and arts and crafts.

CD: There are many contests throughout the week of the fair. Which ones tend to draw the biggest crowd?

MD: The baby contest and the variety show seem to bring out lots of spectators.

CD: Last year the Marriotts Ridge Boosters sold deep fried Oreo cookies at its stand. What new surprises can fair goers expect this year?

MD: We are having a skid loader competition on Monday at 6:30 p.m. This is a new event and is drawing a lot of attention. An obstacle course will be set up to test how proficient and precise the operators are.

CD: Is there anything you would like to say to the people who work to make the Howard County Fair a success?

MD: I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the many volunteers and the board of directors for their time and dedication to our event. Without their support, the Howard County Fair would not exist.
