Nona P. Dickson
Nona Plattner Dickson, of Ellicott City, formerly of Columbia and Highland, died June 20, 2008, of lung and Alzheimer's diseases, at Howard County General Hospital. She was 89.
Born June 8, 1919, in Scotland, S.D., to Fredrick Carl and Bernice Dora Brown Plattner, she graduated from Scotland High School in 1938.
She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1941 with a nursing degree.
She enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served at Hammerfield Army Base in Fresno, Calif., as a lieutenant. She was a member of the Army Air Force Nursing Class. She was discharged in 1944.
That same year, she married Col. Robert A. Dickson.
Mrs. Dickson was a registered nurse who worked as an assistant director of nursing for the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., for at least 10 years. She retired in the late 1970s.
She was a member of the Howard County Genealogical Society.
Mrs. Dickson was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, who died in 1987; a daughter, JoAnn Dickson; and a brother, Vern Plattner.
She is survived by two daughters, Bernice Riley, of Highland, and Roberta Nail, of Bel Air; a son, Fredrick Dickson, of Mount Airy; five grandchildren, Kirk Riley, Kimberly Erwin, Strider Dickson, Bryon Nail and Beret Dickson; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler Dickson, Beckett Dickson and Rhys Erwin.
A memorial gathering for friends is slated for Sunday, July 27, 2008, 4-6 p.m., at Witzke Funeral Homes Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia.
Funeral services with military honors are slated for Monday, July 28, 2008, 10:45 a.m., Old Post Chapel, at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Va.
