Joan L. Tieperman

Joan Leslie Abbott Tieperman, of Woodstock, formerly of Columbia, died Aug. 10, 2008, of heart failure, at her residence. She was 66.

Born May 6, 1942, in Baltimore, to Joseph and Evelyn Abbott, she graduated from Seton High School, now Seton Keough, in Baltimore in 1960.

In 1963, she graduated from Baltimore Junior College with an associate's degree in liberal arts.

She married Joseph F. Tieperman Jr. in 1963.

Mrs. Tieperman worked as a second-grade teacher at St. Anthony's Catholic School in Gardenville, Md., for three years in the early 1960s.

She and her husband relocated to Columbia from Towson in 1965, where Mr. Tieperman worked for the Rouse Co.

While her four children attended Jeffers Hill Elementary School, she worked there as a teacher's aide for five years in the 1970s.

Mrs. Tieperman is remembered as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who had a heart transplant 20 years ago -- the 52nd one performed at Johns Hopkins -- as well as a kidney transplant in 2006.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband and taking piano lessons. Family members describe her as vibrant, eclectic and kind. She inspired others with her perseverance and grace during her many years of illness.

In addition to her husband of 45 years, Joseph F. Tieperman Jr., Mrs. Tieperman is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Parker and Amy Tieperman, of Columbia, and Lance Tieperman and Aimee Dickerson, of White Marsh; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Holly and Michael Sneeringer, of Catonsville, and Brooke and Jonathan Talbot, of Columbia; a sister, Patricia Abbott, of Bel Air; a brother, Thomas J. Abbott, of Hampton; her parents, Joseph Abbott, of Timoniun and Evelyn Abbott, of Bel Air; and nine grandchildren, Ashley Tieperman, Elliot Sneeringer, Abigail Sneeringer, Kelly Tieperman, Jonathan Talbot, Zachary Talbot, Olivia Talbot, Emma Talbot and Madeline Talbot.

A mass of Christian burial is scheduled for Thursday, Aug.14, 2008, 11 a.m., at St. Louis Catholic Church, 12500 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville.

Interment will follow at Columbia Memorial Park in Columbia.

Memorial donations may be made to Heart Transplant Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 5572, Timonium, MD 21094-5572.
