June E. Bloom

June E. Bloom, of Columbia, died Aug. 4, 2008, at Howard County General Hospital. She was 83.

Born May 15, 1925, in Alberton, now called Daniels, to William S. Martin and Eva R. Jordan, she graduated from Ellicott City High School.

She married Lester Bernard Bloom in 1946.

She worked for Leidigs Bakery and McCroys Five and Dime.

Mrs. Bloom was a member of the Yingling-Ridgely VFW Ladies Auxiliary 7472.

Family members recall that she loved Elvis Presley, playing cards and attending yard sales.

She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Lester Bernard Bloom, who died in 1987.

Mrs. Bloom is survived by two daughters, June Marie Bell, of Columbia and Beverly D. Suffill, of Pasadena; two sons, William L. Bloom Sr., of Catonsville and Warren Perry Bloom, of Ellicott City; nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Aug. 7, 2008, at Slack Funeral Home in Ellicott City. The Rev. L. Katherine Moore, of Emory United Methodist Church, in Ellicott City, presided.

Interment followed at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, in Timonium.

Thomas J. Smith

Thomas Jay Smith, of Ellicott City, died July 29, 2008, of dementia, at Genesis Eldercare - Randallstown Center, in Randallstown. He was 64.

Born May 20, 1944, in St. Marys, Pa., to John and Caroline Ruprecht Smith, he graduated from high school in St. Mary's, Pa. in 1962.

Mr. Smith graduated from a Catholic university in Pennsylvania in 1966, with a bachelor's degree in accounting.

He married Judy Hauswirth in 1980.

Mr. Smith was employed as a policy analyst for the federal government in the general accounting office in Ellicott City for 29 years. He retired in 1995.

He was predeceased by a brother, John J. Smith; and a sister, Sara "Sally" Smith.

In addition to his wife of 28 years, Mr. Smith is survived by two daughters, Andrea Smith and Rachel Smith, both of Ellicott City; a stepdaughter, Cory Lauer, of Ellicott City; a stepson, Matthew Hauswirth, of Ellicott City; and two grandsons, Brett Lauer and Andrew Lauer, both of Ellicott City.

Memorial services were held Aug. 7, 2008, at Slack Funeral Home in Ellicott City.

Lois E. Derrick

Lois Eleanor Derrick, of Ellicott City, formerly of Dayton, died Aug. 15, 2008, at Long View Nursing Home, in Manchester. She was 80.

She was born Sept. 9, 1927, in Baltimore, to Elmon M. Sr. and Beulah A. Johnson Day.

She married George A. "Dick" Healey Jr., who died in 1969.

She later married Enoch L. Derrick.

During her first marriage, she and then-husband George A. Healey Jr. owned and operated Healey's Tavern, in Ellicott City. Later, the couple changed the name to Roscoe's Tavern. The tavern was destroyed by Hurricane Agnes in 1972.

Mrs. Derrick was also a homemaker.

Family members recall that she loved listening to music and dancing.

She was predeceased by a husband, George Healey Jr., who died in 1969; a husband, Enoch L. Derrick, who died in 1990; four brothers, Robert C. Day, Albert E. "Dutch" Day, H. Jerome "Chick" Day and Elmon M. "Bubby" Day Jr.; and two sisters, Matilda E. Seibert and Betty L. Gaither.

Mrs. Derrick is survived by a sister, B. Anna Wroten, of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

No funeral services have been scheduled.

Interment was private.
