General Growth Properties executives propose cures for Town Center's ills, which are likely exaggerated or non-existent.

Town Center may fail their definition of "lively" but we are rated as one of the 10 best places to live. Our elected officials should ask them: 1) to describe precisely the defects to be solved by more residences, restaurants and shops around the lakefront. Has there been an outcry that the number of restaurants and shops in the mall and Town Center are insufficient? 2) What is meant by a "new cultural district" in Town Center, new buildings? Is Symphony Woods defective or the theater at Howard Community College too distant? The Route 29 traffic for Symphony Woods concerts gets worse each year. How will a new district help?

Their other projects similarly respond to unproven woes and will generate more auto traffic. Burning gasoline stalled in rush-hour traffic along Little Patuxent Parkway will not improve our quality of life. The draft promises Utopia with more roads, but we would get Tysons Corner.

Our elected officials should legislate Town Center zoning changes to avoid the loss of Columbia's high rating, disapprove adding housing and commercial buildings simply for profit, and discourage ever-changing "drafts."
