Triathlon
Make a Wish
Erin Leibert, of Columbia, will participate in the 25th anniversary Make-A-Wish Triathlon at Sea Colony in Bethany Beach, Del., Sept. 20. The annual event, hosted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic, Inc., raises money to fulfill the wishes of area children with life-threatening medical conditions. Leibert competed in her first Make-A-Wish Triathlon at Sea Colony four years ago. Up to 1,000 athletes will participate in this year's event as individuals or members of a relay team.
Golf
Turf Valley Women
Halfway through the golf season, some Turf Valley Women's 18-Hole Group players enjoyed 18 holes of medal play. A1 player Ok Sun Kim shot an 88 for low gross honors and, along with Jung Choi, had only 32 putts. Marion Strange took low net honors (74). Continuing to star in A2, Cindy Starnes shot a 100/75 and took low gross/net honors, but Carla Dolan putted better (32).
Loretta Greer was the low gross/net (105/74) winner for B1, and Marge Meisinger had an impressive low putts of 30. B2 players split the honors up with Deb Ford shooting a low gross of 103, Kathy Sappington winning low net (70) and Elise Nayden, Betty Robinson and Carmen Vaessen tying for low putts (31).
PGA Tour World Amateur Handicap
The PGA Tour Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship, the world's largest amateur handicap golf tournament, will be held on more than 50 courses Aug. 25-29 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Local participants will include Columbia's Jim Cavanaugh and Robert Leight, Glenwood's Preston Ellis, and Laurel's David Goodison.

Kathleen Wegner and Michael Wegner, 11, mother and son, were top finishers in the Howard County Striders' 2008 Summer Sizzler Weekly Series No. 4 two-mile race at Burleight Manor Middle School July 30. Julia Nardone, also 11, finished third. Karsten Brown and Karen Young were victorious in the five-mile race.

Softball
Maryland Stars
The Maryland Stars Black 14 moved up an age group and played as a 16-U team in the Summer Sizzler Tournament in Shippensburg, Pa.
The tournament included teams from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Massachusetts and Maryland.
The Stars tied the Indian Mills Mystics in the first game, 5-5. The Stars then defeated Pennsylvania's Krunch Red, 4-1, and the Virginia Cobras, 4-1. Next was an Aug. 2 blowout win over the New York Clash, 10-1. The Stars then suffered their only loss in the tournament, 2-1, to Pennsylvania Krunch Blue. The Stars then finshed the day with a crushing win over the Maryland Champions, 8-2.
The Stars began their play Aug. 3 as a seventh seed in the Gold bracket beginning with a win in dramatic seventh inning win over the Indian Mills Mystics, 5-4. The Stars then beat the Long Island Bandits, 7-2. The next opponent was a very tough Lightning Elite squad from Pittsford, N.Y. The Stars battled to a 5-2 victory.
In the championship game, the Stars avenged their only loss of the tournament, facing off against Pennsylvaia Krunch Blue, which up to that point had been undefeated. The Stars came from behind in the late innings to win the game, 3-1, and to capture first place in the tournament.
