Junior Striders
Seven Howard County Junior Striders qualified to compete in the AAU Junior Olympic Summer Games national track meet in Detroit. Sarah Kenney won the 14-year-old girls 3,000-meter racewalk in 18:10. Also placing were Brittany Lang (10G 1,500 run, 9. 5:26), Michael Wegner (12B 3,000 run, 7. 10:33), Julie Gessler (15-16G 3,000 run, 10. 11:26) and Kahra Kelty, Nicole Vanagas, Gessler and Caprice Kelty (15-16G 4x800 relay, 9. 10:36).
Centennial Fun Run
The Centennial Fun Run was held Aug. 5. A moment of silence in memory of Dave Fitzpatrick was held. Fitzpatrick, who died Aug. 4, directed runners on the neighborhood course for more than 25 years. The Centennial Fun Run ended the 2008 season on Aug. 12.

Kangaroo Kids
Members of the Kangaroo Kids competition team competed at the AAU Junior Olympics in Detroit, July 30-Aug. 2. There were 575 athletes from all over the United States as well as competitors from Australia, Canada and Singapore. The team competed in individual, pairs, Double Dutch and group show events.
Eddie Yacynych received the Joel Ferrell Award, which goes to the Outstanding United States Male and/or Female athlete in each sport at the Junior Olympic Games. Kangaroo Kids parent volunteer Cindy Bork received recognition as the AAU Jump Rope Volunteer of the Year.

The medal play winners were Marion Strange (A1 low gross/net/putts, 101/85/31), Kathy Lehner (A2 low gross/net, 108/81) and Ginger Swisher (A2 low putts, 32), Betty Robinson (B1 low gross/net/putts, 110/77/35), Rita Gallizzo (low putts) and Kathy Sappington (B2 low gross/net/putts, 108/71/37). Carmen Vaessen and Sue Drake shared low putts honors with Sappington.
