Field hockey
The Howard/Carroll Officials Association is looking for people interested in officiating field hockey. Training will begin the week of Aug. 18, with the fall high school and recreational leagues beginning in September. Call 410-290-6510.
Golf
The Athelas Institute's Golf Classic will be held Sept. 22 at Willow Springs Golf Course, in West Friendship. The format is captain's choice. The entry fees are $100 (individual) and $380 (foursome). Business and personal sponsorships are available. Call 410-964-1241.
The First Tee of Howard County is accepting applications for fall sessions. Students ages 5-18 can learn basic golf skills. Applications are available at Fairway Hill Golf Club. Call 410-730-1114.

Cheerleading
Tryouts for the Long Reach High School cheerleading teams will be held Aug. 16-22 at Long Reach. The tryout times Aug. 16-19 are 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. Aug. 20-22 the times are 3-5 p.m. Call 410-313-7117.
Baseball
The 15-U Columbia Red Storm travel team will hold tryouts for a few open positions Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. and Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. at Oakland Mills High School.
The Maryland Blue Jays are looking for players for their U-8, U-9, U-13 and U-14 teams. All positions are open but the Blue Jays are specifically looking for pitchers and catchers for the U-13 and U-14 teams. Tryouts will be held at Centennial Park, field 3 from 2-4 p.m., Aug. 17, 24 and 31. Call 443-636-6561.
The 13-U and 14-U Maryland FireBirds will hold tryouts for pitchers and catchers only on Aug. 16 and 23 at Oakland Mills High School tryouts start at 3 p.m. each day. Call 410-997-0077.

The U-9 Savage Spirit travel team will hold tryouts on Aug. 17 and 24 at Savage Park, field 3, from 5-7 p.m. Call 410-961-3942.
The U-10 Savage Spirit travel team will hold tryouts Aug. 16 and 17 at Savage Park, field 3 at 6 p.m. Players must be born on or after May 1, 1998 and they are encouraged to attend each tryout date. E-mail timkaths@verizon.net.

Tryouts for the 13-U HCYP Raiders full-time travel teams begin the weekend of Aug. 16-17. Eligible players have birthdates between May 1, 1995 and April 30, 1996. Tryouts for the 13-U Metro and MABA Raiders will be held Aug. 16 from 4-7 p.m. and Aug. 17 from 3-6 p.m. at Wallas Park, field 11. Players should arrive early to sign in and warm up. HCYP's goal is to have three 13-U full-time travel teams for the spring season.
The WHC Renegades travel teams are holding tryouts Sept. 13 and 14 at Western Regional Park, field 1. The tryout times follow. Arrive early to register and get loose.
Sept. 13: 8-U full time, 9-U full time and 10-U full time travel, all 4:30-6 p.m. ; 11-U full time, 12-U full time, 13-U full time and 11-12 Sunday only, all 7-9 p.m.
Sept. 14: 14-U full time and 15-U full time, 4-6 p.m.; 16-U full time and 17-U full time, 7-9 p.m.

The Western Howard County Fever fastpitch travel softball program will be holding tryouts for both the 12-U and 10-U levels on Aug. 17 and 24 at Western Regional Park. The program is looking to field two teams at the 12-U level and at least one team at the 10-U level. The 12-U tryouts are 2-4 p.m.; the 10-U tryouts are 4-6 p.m.
