Running

The Knights of Columbus 10k run, 3/4-mile fun walk and kids fun run will be held Aug. 30 at the Shrine of St. Anthony on Folly Quarter Road. The race begins at 8 a.m. This family event supports local charities, including the Arc of Howard County and FISH of Howard County. Entry fee: $20 (through Sat., Aug. 23, $25 afterward). Celebration of Sports

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks' sixth annual Celebration of Sports banquet will be Oct. 20 at Turf Valley Resort. Tony Brudis, Jim Carlan, Don Disney, Karen Dye, Roger Hockey, Helen Moody and Stanley Nedzel will be inducted into the Community Sports Hall of Fame at the event. Bicycling

The 24 Hours of Booty, a non-competitive charity cycling event that is geared to teams and individuals, will come to Columbia's Gateway Business Park Sept. 6-7. The event is open to participants of all ages and skill levels. Fee: $45 per participant plus a minimum of $150 fundraising. The 24 Hours of Booty benefits the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Go to www.24hoursofbooty.org.

Powerlifting

Special Olympics Howard County needs volunteers to assist in its fall powerlifting program. Practices are held Thursdays, 7:30-9 p.m., and Sundays, 1-2:30 p.m., at Quest Fitness Center in Ellicott City. Adults and high school students are welcome to volunteer. Golf

The Athelas Institute's Golf Classic will be held Sept. 22 at Willow Springs Golf Course in West Friendship. The start time is 9 a.m. and the format is captain's choice. The WHC Renegades travel teams are holding tryouts Sept. 13 and 14 at Western Regional Park, field 1. The tryouts will be conducted by the Baseball Factory and a written evaluation will be forwarded to WHC coaches. The tryout times are:

Sept. 13: 8-U full time, 9-U full time and 10-U full time travel, all 4:30-6 p.m. ; 11-U full time, 12-U full time, 13-U full time and 11-12 Sunday only, all 7-9 p.m.

Softball

Howard County Youth Program's year-round Liberty softball teams will hold tryouts in September. These teams compete mostly in USSSA "C" level tournaments (and up to two B or Open level tournaments per year). The level of commitment and competition is not as high as with the HCYP Patriots.

Tryouts will be at Kiwanis-Wallas Park, field 7, in Ellicott City, as follows:

U-10: Sept. 13 (1-3 p.m.) and Sept. 21 (noon-2 p.m.). All U-10 players planning on trying out must e-mail ravens515@gmail.com.
