As a long time physician here in Columbia, it was ironic to have two (Aug. 14) articles juxtaposed concerning Elise Ray and Dave Fitzpatrick. ("Gymnast transforms from athlete to artist" and "Dave Fitzpatrick's presence at Fun Run will be missed.") Both were patients of mine at one time.
Part of my practice is sports medicine and as such I have treated some of Howard County's fit and finest. But the other part of what I do is see people with musculoskeletal problems at the other spectrum, such as stroke patients.
Much like an athlete is hampered by an injury to a muscle or tendon making it difficult to perform at their physical prime, Dave's injury was to his greatest asset -- his brain -- making it difficult to perform his usual feats of mental legerdemain as a cryptologist. I was so impressed with (Dave's wife) Peggy's quiet determination in always advocating for her husband. I was equally impressed with Dave's work ethic through a very frustrating disability.
Thanks so much for highlighting this deserving "athlete" and devoted wife. You will always remember certain patients as a doctor -- and Dave was one of them. He earned the recognition.
